JANUARY
Fanfiction:

Raiders of the Deep Caverns -- Homestuck, 6,300 words. Wherein Aradia Megido, intrepid explorer and amateur archaeologist, discovers an abandoned brooding cavern complex and invites her hatefriends Terezi Pyrope and Vriska Serket to assist in the exploration of its wild and dangerous depths. Featuring six pesterlogs, three dialogue-only passages, four third-person limited POV sections, a brief beach interlude, a tenuous framing device, and world-building that flies right over the various protagonists' heads and horns. Written for [archiveofourown.org profile] lyricalIcarus in Ladystuck 2013.
Of Stone and of Sky -- Homestuck, 5,300 words. As the sun plummeted toward the western mountains' waiting teeth, the jagged terrain of the badlands fell away, stone dropping in layers of gray, gold, ochre, down to a vast, barren plain. This was Hammerfall, the cursed place where the gods struck the earth to raise the Anvil. No rain fell. No rivers ran. No life grew. Even the vultures avoided this place, knowing in their bones that it was both holy and inimical. Here the gathered holds of the northwest quarter came, every twenty years, to call the rain. Here they brought life from death. Written for chthonianCrocuta in Ladystuck 2013.
Work in Progress -- Homestuck, 1,275 words. It's hard being a graduate student, trying to write a thesis, create a revolutionary computer program, or prove the existence of dragons while living in a shitty apartment with your two girlfriends. It's hard, but at least your girlfriends understand. Written for [archiveofourown.org profile] scrunch in Ladystuck Treats 2013.
Be the Food of Love -- Homestuck, 2,300 words. Rose attempts to alchemize a violin and deal with her attraction to Kanaya. She gets some help with the first goal; for the other, she's on her own. Cotton Candy Bingo fill.

The clock on the living room wall ticks rhythmically above your head. Outside, light November rain mists down on the fallen leaves and dormant grass. ANALYSIS

As always, I count word by posting date rather than writing date, which can give somewhat misleading results if you are trying to track my periods of greatest productivity. I count "Trollstuck: Make Her Pay" only by completed chapters rather than section-by-section, which means there are a couple pieces of chapter 10 that are not officially in this analysis even though I did technically post them in 2014.

This year is the first since 2009 that I wrote fewer than 120,000 words. That annoys me, especially since I only barely reached that goal last year. You'd think being unemployed would give me more time for writing, but in practice what it does is suck away all my motivation. *sigh* Well, hopefully that will change in 2015.

I signed up for four fic challenges/exchanges this year: Remix Redux, Narnia Fic Exchange, Yuletide, and Ladystuck. I completed Remix Redux, NFE (plus a pinch hit!), and Yuletide. My Ladystuck fic is not due for another week and a half. (I did, however, finish last year's Ladystuck fic, plus a pinch hit and a treat last January, so I trust I will manage at least the basic assignment again this January.) I also finished my first Cotton Candy Bingo card, two years late, and had fun with a little prompt request meme of my own in October.

I don't think there was any particular theme to my year, nor did I discover any new and fascinating fandoms to write in. I did manage to write a bit of original fiction! It's not nearly as much as I would have preferred, but something is better than nothing, and snippets can be a useful first step in reviving dormant stories of greater length.

Did you write more than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
---Much less, alas! *shakes fist at the uncaring universe that stole my stable job*

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year?
---None, really? Well, perhaps finishing "A Problem Like Ginevra," which I firmly expected to remain a fragment. Various other prompt responses and assignments took unforeseen turns, but at this point I would be more surprised if prompts and assignments went exactly as planned, so I wouldn't call that unpredicted.

Did you take any writing risks this year?
---Well, I wrote actualfax porn for my remix. That was a bit risky, since I am so rarely actively interested in writing sex, and given that remix exchanges have hard deadlines...

I guess writing a story centered around suicide and resurrection ("Untimely Ripped") was also risky, particularly since my own periodic depression has never included suicidal ideation as a symptom. I mean, when I was in junior school and high school I used to joke that I could never commit suicide until I was X number of years old so I could do Random Activity first (the specifics varied), which got me some concerned conversations with teachers, but that was more of a... I dunno... way of dealing with the fact that I had no idea whatsoever what I was going to do with my life once I was out of formal schooling, because my only 'passion' was writing and I was pretty sure I couldn't make a living at that, plus nobody ever tells you what to study in order to get a nice, soulless office job that won't take up too much of your attention. I have felt very gray sometimes, but never to the point where I thought I wouldn't find my connection to the rest of the world again, or thought dying would in any way be better. Anyway, that nervousness about subject matter was the main reason I wrote "Untimely Ripped" anonymously until I had the whole thing finished and edited. I didn't want my name attached to it in case I screwed up somewhere in the middle.

Do you have any fanfic or original fic goals for the New Year?
---Write more of everything! Also, finish "Trollstuck: Make Her Pay," and then write at least five new chapters of "The Guardian in Spite of Herself."

Favorite story -- not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest:
---Hmm. I think either "Untimely Ripped," "Of Stone and of Sky," or "The Vastness of the Sky." The first I love because it's all about sisters and depression and situations with no good solutions. The latter two are more for the world-building and the sense of empty space. There's a sort of freedom inherent in the physical environment of both stories that is very appealing to me... and I also like what I managed to do with interpersonal relationships, of course.

Best story:
---Probably "The Vastness of the Sky." It's well constructed, it has things to say about the longing for adventure balanced against the longing for home, it gives Digory and Polly a day in the sun as young adults, and it does the thing Lewis himself does in canon, which is sketch just enough of a world and culture to leave readers wanting more.

Most underappreciated by the universe:
---Perhaps "In the Absence of Sun (The Grief Inside Your Bones)," though I wouldn't say it had a bad reception. Just, I was expecting slightly more interest, given fandom's general predilection for porn. My Yuletide assignment has also gone largely ignored, though in that case it's only to be expected since it's for a canon so obscure that I think I've written the only extant story in the fandom. *wry*

Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
---Oddly enough, I don't think I wrote a fic of that type this year. I suppose "They Do Not Always Like It" comes closest, for being a horror story of the creeping unease variety.

Sexiest story:
---"In the Absence of Sun (The Grief Inside Your Bones)," of course. Explicit threesome porn is hard to top, considering how little porn I write, though "Playing Politics" makes a reasonable bid despite its fade-to-black ending.

Hardest story to write:
---Freaking "Four by Four" chapter 3, which I have been working on for over two years. *headdesk* But I defeated it in the end! Also "Come Close to Your Own World," which snarled up my brain for ages and made it very tricky to write anything else while it was being recalcitrant.

Easiest story to write:
---Pick any of the tiny prompt!fics from October. They were all tossed off very quickly without great agonizing on my part.

Most fun to write:
---"Work in Progress" was pretty fun to write, but I think "Giant Robot Mayhem Doesn't Happen in a Day" wins this category. I love writing chatlogs, and really, how can a story about teenagers building giant robots mostly for the heck of it fail to be awesome? :-)

Most disappointing:
---"Trollstuck: Make Her Pay," for not being finished yet! *beats head against table*

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
---None, really? Well, I wrote "The Whole of the Law" as an attempt to reconcile Latula with what we know of Redglare, but I'm not sure that was a shift in ideas so much as an uncovering and refinement of ones I already held.

Story with the single sweetest moment:
---Oh, I don't know. The vast majority of my work is about emotional connection in one form or another. It's hard for me to judge which incident is sweetest... particularly since they often come accompanied by background angst.

Biggest surprise:
---Hmm. Writing Digory and Polly, I guess. They have never been my favorite Narnia characters and I'd never thought much about what they did between MN and LWW, but my other NFE fic attempt wasn't working so I wrote them an adventure/exploration story which ended up being one of my favorites fics of the year. And then, having established Polly as a journalist, I wrote another fic about them, this one set during the 1930s, which is an era not much touched upon in Narnia fanfiction but full of interesting implications for people who've seen the death of an entire world.

Most revealing story:
---"The Mind Is Its Own Place, and in Itself" is kind of a case study on my own experience of depression. "Untimely Ripped" also dips into that territory, as do several other fics. Come to think of it, I wrote a fair bit about depression and angst and missed connections this year, which suggests that I was not having a great time. This is probably true. I am not always the greatest at self-reflection, but I am fairly sure that uncertainty over the fate of my job, and then six months of unemployment, have not been good for my mental and emotional outlook, despite some bright spots like returning (however tenuously) to college.

Here's hoping 2015 will be kinder. :-)

And that is that for the year.
